Press Release from the Tigray Diaspora Community
Press Release from the Tigray Diaspora Community
February 17, 2022
Today, all Tigray diaspora organizations across the world are holding a protest rally demanding actions from the EU and its member states to:
Take action to end the more than year-long Tigray genocide that has been perpetrated by the governments of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and their allies. The inaction by the international community for more than a year has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, including the massacre and weaponized rape of thousands of civilians, destruction of more than 90% of health facilities, looting, and destruction of civilian infrastructure which has devastated the livelihood of all Tigrayans.
Disinvite Abiy Ahmed Ali from the EU-AU summit. As someone who is leading the genocidal war on Tigray, he doesn’t deserve to sit among statesmen. If he is allowed to come to Brussels, he should be held accountable for the crimes against humanity has been committing with impunity.
The Ethiopian government, with direct or indirect support from foreign actors, has accelerated executing its grand program whose goal happens to be systematic extermination of the people of Tigray. Today, as we speak, the Abiy regime continues with three new draconian tools to execute the Tigray genocide-:
Tigray has been under an air-tight siege for more than a year. The Abiy government has completely blocked food and medical aid from entering Tigray after destroying the meager food resources Tigray had. It has entirely blocked off desperately needed fuel, agricultural supplies, and other imports from reaching Tigray. Children, the elderly, and sick people are dying from a lack of adequate basic food and proper health care. Tigray has also been under complete and total darkness. Abiy has cutoff electricity, telephone, and internet and closed all banking services. The purpose of this blockade is crystal clear: Using total starvation as a weapon of extermination. We demand the international community to stop turning a blind eye and condemn the ongoing crime and take action to end the siege, as thousands of Tigrayan children, sick and elderly are helplessly dying in their sleep.
Tigrayans are languishing in internment camps. Mr. Abiy’s security agents have been arresting teenagers, adults, and elderly individuals of Tigray descent en masse. Their “crime”? Their Tigrayan lineage. Today, despite the release of some prisoners, there are tens of thousands of Tigrayan professionals, including university professors, medical doctors, teachers, taxi drivers, priests, and former members of the Ethiopian armed forces, who had served as UN Peacekeepers in many African countries, languishing in concentration camps. Children and infants have been deliberately separated from their parents and the sick are suffering from a lack of food and medical care. These acts violate international law and norms. We ask the international community to take strong action to stop the egregious acts on our families by the Ethiopian security apparatus.
The Abiy govt has employed destructive weaponized drones and foreign mercenaries bought from rogue states including Turkey, Iran, and China. These drones operated by mercenaries have been killing civilians and destroying Tigray’s infrastructure indiscriminately. We ask the international community to condemn the involvement of Turkey, UAE, China, and Iran in the genocide of Tigray. We demand the international community to take action on these countries and to immediately stop them from arming the genocidal Abiy’s regime, as the sieged civilians are being daily terrorized and bombarded indiscriminately.
Unfortunately, the inaction and silence of the world community have emboldened the Abiy government and its allies to continue the genocide they started a year ago with intensity and despicable cruelty. We call upon the international community to immediately take actions to:
End the massacres, humanitarian siege, mass arrests, and aerial bombardment of Tigray
Stop Turkey, UAE, Iran, and China from selling drones, arms, and mercenaries that are enabling the Abiy regime to implement genocide on the Tigray people.
The inaction by the international community is helping the oppressors and not the victims. It’s not past due to take action now according to international laws and norms to stop the genocide. A key step in this process is to hold Abiy Ahmed Ali accountable for his actions. Allowing him to attend the summit sets dangerous precedence to African countries, where democracy is fragile and human rights violation is rampant.
In solidarity for justice, democracy and respect of human rights
